Names and numbers

5-yo told me the other day,

"Mom, there are two boys in my class with the same name. Carlos. One of them is new. So he has to have a number."

This seemed a little harsh. Surely the teacher didn't say "Sorry, there's already a Carlos in this class, so you'll just have to be called Number 27 instead"? So I asked 5-yo for a bit more detail.

"Well, it's not just a number. It's his name AND a number."

I wasn't sure this was much better. Did the teacher say "We'll call you Carlos 2, ok?" So I probed a bit more.

"He's One Carlos. We already had Carlos, and the new boy is One Carlos."

Aaaaaah. All is revealed.

"That's not One Carlos, Honey. That's Juan Carlos."

So confusing, being in Kindergarten.

  6. That is too cute. My girls always talk about the United Steaks of America. Maybe there is something in that.

  7. Love it. It randomly reminds me of when I was living in Mexico, teaching. One student I knew couldn't translate "nariz" in an English test so he wrote "no se" ("I don't know" in Spanish). (Clue: you use your nariz to smell....)

  8. One Carlos, Two Carlos... Love it. In my day, if there were, say, two Marks in a class, you were allowed to call one 'Big Mark', and the other 'Little Mark'. Not sure they'd allow that now, it being a bit sizeist an' all.

My son came home last week and said he couldn't find someone's name at school as he was looking it up under W.

    It was Nguyen.

  17. ha! Reminds me that before I lived in California I did not realize that the San Diego town of "La Jolla" which I had only ever seen written down was the same place I had heard referred to as "La Hoiya".

  18. I remember that we had three Melanies in class. They were called Mel1, Mel2 and Mel3. Nobody thought anything unusual about it.

  20. I was in an orchestra once with no less than 5 girls named Katy(ie). This really didn't matter that much most of the time because the director hardly ever called anyone by name.
