A convoluted puzzle

Now you know how I enjoy a brain-teaser when I'm out shopping. Well, I spotted another one yesterday. I was in Wal-Mart, and as I walked past the bedding section, I read the following sign above one of the aisles:

bed pillows
foam pillows
feather pillows
convoluted pillows.

Intriguing. Convoluted pillows. I like my sleep time to be simple and straightforward. The last thing I would want is a convoluted pillow giving me convoluted dreams.

The amazing thing is that not only do enough people want to buy convoluted pillows that it is worth Wal-Mart's while to stock them, but that so many people want to buy them that they merit a listing on the aisle sign.

Picture me this Saturday morning, propped up on my convoluted pillows, sipping my aseptic drink, and exclaiming "good jahb" at intervals. Do you think I'd pass for a local?

  1. I have to laugh at 'good jahb' - I had to say it yesterday, frequently while helping at Miss E's preschool. When I said 'you're very clever' a couple of times - a bunch of wide eyed 3-4 year olds just stared blankly at me!

  2. ha! now that i can't help you with. i've lived in the US of A all my life and i've never heard of a convoluted pillow.

did you find out what it is? is it a pillow that conforms to your shape? (but then woudln't the other pillows be labled "nonconformist pillows"?)

  3. annie, "clever" sometimes has connotations here, in certain usages. if someone is being overly clever, they're being a smart-aleck.

  4. I want a convoluted pillow and I want it now. You're sure it's not some surreal store in a parallel universe you just pop into now and again? Stephen King has a lot to answer for.

  5. The convoluted pillow sounds unnecessarily complicated. I'll stick to my regular pillow, thanks.

  6. So, I'm on tenterhooks now - have you got one? What on earth does it do? Trust you to spot that, good jahb indeed... :)

Loved your Halloween post! I laughed thinking of your husband measuring to cricket standards, he's obviously clever. Like you I go for 6' people standing on each other's heads - it's a personal thing but hey, it works...

  7. I'm intrigued by the fact that one of them is called a "bed pillow".
What other kind of pillows do we need?
All the pillows on our beds are feather.

  8. Iota;
rather convoluted than high-faluted, I say

Perhaps it's architectural in another universe, a convoluted and fluted pillar ?

++ what if you were a doctor's assistant in an inoculation clinic, you know, for people needing anti-typhoid etc before travelling to far-flung mosquito (and crocodile-)infested regions ? Would you spend your day saying

    'Good jab, good jab' ?

You open up all sorts of other worlds, wish I could stay + dream a bit with you

  10. Convoluted pillow - nice one. I imagine it to be like one of those pregnancy pillows, shaped like a boomerang, that become, err..., convoluted when you want to get out of bed.

  13. Good jahb is one of those phrases you can't say without an American accent. I say it all the time nd find it very amusing for some reason.
